SAT TUTORING
SAT tutoring with Asian Ivy Labs is more than just a comprehensive or surface level overview of concepts which the test covers. At Asian Ivy Labs, we understand that the key to outstanding SAT achievement is integration and implementation of global test mastery.
This involves several key areas. First, students must be aware of the true Intention of the test. Second, each student must know the exact Format of the exam, including the three section types, Math, Reading, and Writing, and the nature of sections within each type, along with the content of each.
Lastly, maximizing one’s score relies heavily on a clear understanding of test Scoring. Knowing the value of each right, wrong and omitted answer, on each of the different sections, can have a significant impact on one’s final score.
INTENTION
What purpose does the SAT serve and why is exceptional performance so critical?
The SAT Reasoning Test is the most widely used admissions test among colleges
and universities in the United States. It tests students' knowledge of subjects
that are necessary for college success.
The SAT is an important admissions resource for colleges. It is one of the best predictors of how well students will do in college. Hence, it is weighted heavily amongst admissions criteria.
FORMAT
The SAT is comprised of three section types:
Mathematics, Reading,
and Writing.
These subjects are divided into 10 total testing sections. The first section is a 25-minute essay. Sections two through seven are 25-minute sections and sections eight and nine are 20-minute sections, each covering any one of the subjects. The last section is always a 10-minute multiple-choice writing section.
Only nine sections are scored, three of each type. One unscored section, which can be any one of the three types, is used to test future test questions. The student is not informed which section is unscored.
The total comes to 3hrs and 45mins of testing.
MATH
The Mathematics Section of the SAT consists of 70 minutes of testing including
two 25 minute sections and one 20 minute section. There are two types of questions.
The mathematics section of the SAT contains two types of questions:
Multiple-choice questions (44 questions)
Student-produced response questions appear without answer choices. You'll use your answer sheet to "grid in" your solution. (10 questions)
READING
The three critical reading sections come to 70 minutes of testing with two 25 min sections and one 20 minute section.
Critical reading sections can be divided into two areas:
Passage-based Reading
Sentence Completions
WRITING
The three writing sections come to 60 minutes of testing with two 25 minute sections and one 10 minute.
These sections test:
Grammar
Usage
Word choice
SCORING
Understanding SAT score is one of the keys to success.
The three sections of the SAT are each scored from 200-800 thus producing
a total of 2400 possible points.
Each section score is converted from a Raw
Score.
The Writing Section Raw Score is the composite of a multiple-choice
subscore and an essay subscore.
RAW SCORE
Each CORRECT answer: add (+) 1 point
Each WRONG answer for a
Multiple-choice question: subtract (-) 1/4 of a point
Student-produced response: no points subtracted
Each OMITTED question: no points subtracted
WRITING SUBSCORE
The essay subscore is reported on a 2-12 scale.
Each essay is independently scored from 1 to 6 by two readers.
These readers' scores are combined to produce a 2-12 scale.
The writing multiple-choice subscore is calculated in the same way as the
reading and math sections’ raw scores.
The writing multiple-choice subscore counts for approximately 70% and the
essay subscore counts for approximately 30% of your total raw score.
